R163 - Bernd Gräfrath

Probleemblad 1, 2002

1. Qg5 Kf8 2. Qe7 Kg8 3. Qf7#. But why not 1... OO? The black pawn structure requires 5 captures, together with Bf1 these are the missing pieces. Due to the beginmoves, none of the pawns could have captured the white b-pawn as a pawn, so it promoted. There are only 3 pieces available for capturing, so either the pawn promoted on e8, or it passed through d7. So the black king moved.
