(a) Two wh. caps are d2xe3 & e2xf3. Two bl. caps are hxg and last move -1. Rf7xg7+. If we assume the bPa7 has been captured on its file, then wh. promotions are ruled out, last move was Rf7xQg7 and the position does not unlock. Thus bPa7 did promote on b1 after bxa, and wPc2 did promote on d8 after c6xd7.

Retract
-1. Rf7xNg7+ d2xNe3
-2. Nf5-e3 Ne6-g7
-3. Ng7-f5+ Nf4-e6
-4. Bf5-h3 Nh3-f4+
-5. Bb1-f5 a4-a5
-6. b2-b1=B a3-a4
-7. b3-b2 a2-a3
-8. a4xBb3 Bc4-b3
-9. a5-a4 Bf1-c4
-10. Kg4-h4 e2xB/Nf3+
and the position unlocks after the depromotion of wNh3 on d8, etc.

Last 19 single moves are precisely determined.

(b) Here d2xe3 and e2xf3 account for all wh. caps. wPc2 has been captured on its file. The other bl. caps are hxg, axb for promotion on b1 or c1 & -1. Rf7xg7+.

Retract
-1. Rf7xQg7+ d2xQe3
-2. Qc5-e3 b3-b4
-3. Qc1/c2/f5xPc5 c4-c5
-4. Qb1-c1/c2/f5 c3-c4
-5. b2-b1=Q c2-c3
-6. a3xNb2 Nd3-b2
-7. a4-a3 Nf4-d3
-8. Bc8-h3 Nh3-f4+
-9. d7-d6 Nd6-e8
-10. a5-a4 Rd8/e8-f8
and the position unlocks by retracting h7xBg6, reconducting the wBg6 on f1, retracting e2xNf3, wPh4-h5 etc.

The twins have quite different unlocking maneuvers, with a nice echo when the first two retractions are similar uncaptures (Knights in (a), Queens in (b)) on g7 and e3.

Bl. caps are c7xb6, dxc & hxg. They require the promotion of wPa2 on a8 or b8 (after a7xNb8). Unlocking the position requires extracting the bQa3.

Retracting -1. d7xc6+ is forbidden because we would then have to retract c7-c5 and then the Wh. promotion would be impossible to undo. So that last move is -1. c7-c6 mate. Then the wh. promotion was on b8.
