618 - A. Kornilov
Europe Echecs 444, 04/1996

Wh. caps are h6xg7, gxf & bQR in the NW corner. Bl. caps are c7xd6 & wPa on its file. Wh. promoted his b pawn after b6xRa7-a8=Q/N. Bl. has no possible last move:

-1. a7-a6??
-1. f7-f6?? then h6xBg7 & g6xRf7 have to be retracted, which is impossible because g7-g6 must take place between them.
-1. Kf6-e5?? retro-play goes on -1 ... Bf4-g5+ -2. Kg5-f6 Be5-f4+ etc. There is no progress.
-1. Kf4-e5?? fails similarly.

Last move was by Wh., e.g. -1 ... f7-f6, or -1 ... Nd4 allowing -2. Kf4-e5 Bf6-g5+ -3. Kg5-f4 Bb2-f6+ -4. Kf6-g5 Bc1-b2+ etc. 1. f4# ?? is illegal. Bl. mates forward with 1 ... Qxg7#.

1. f4 a5 2. f5 a4 3. f6 a3 4. fxg7 Nf6 5. g8=Q axb2 6. Qg3 Ra3 7. Qd6 cxd6 8. g4 Qb6 9. g5 Kd8 10. g6 Kc7 11. g7 Kc6 12. g8=Q Kc5 13. Qg2 Bg7 14. Qc6+ bxc6 15. h4 Ba6 16. h5 Bd3 17. h6 Bf5 18. hxg7 h5 19. g8=Q h4 20. Qg2 h3 21. Qd5+ cxd5 22. d3 Nc6 23. Qd2 Rb8 24. Qg5 Rb7 25. Qg8 Qb4+

Three Frolkin Q-promotions combined with an anti-phoenix Q, all on same square.

Two bl. caps are hxg & bxa. One wh. cap is hxg. The bK can be extracted from the 1st row by driving him to h4 and retracting g2-g3+ and later Bf3/g4xh5 (2nd wh. cap). Thus wBf1 has been captured at home (3rd bl. cap) and wBh5 is wPd2 promoted after d6xe7 (3rd wh. cap). A triangulation by the bl. King will be required !

Retract -1. b5xNa4 Nc5-a4 -2. Rf1-e1 Nd3-c5 -3. Ke1-d1 Nc1-d3+ -4. Kd2-e1 Nd3-c1 -5. Kd1-d2+ Nc1-d3 -6. Ke1-d1 Kc2-b1 -7. b6-b5 Kb3-c2
Now drive bK to d2, then bR to d1, then bK to h4, then retract g2-g3+, h3xQ/R/Bg4, Bf3xQ/R/Bh5, extract Bs g1 & h2, retract h2-h3 and everything unlocks.
