No. 438, Oct. 1995 - SOLUTIONS

609 - P. Wassong
Europe Echecs 438, 10/1995

Last move is e2xf3# because retracting f2-f3 would entomb bBh2. Two wh. caps are e2xf3 & h2xg3. Two bl. caps are e7xf6 & f/dxe. wPa2 and bPa7 could not appear in these captures unless they went to promotion.

The cage unlocks by retracting e7xf6, which requires a former reconduction of bBf8, which then cannot be standing now on h2 but must have been captured by a5xBb6, so that the wPa2 promoted to b8.

Retract -1. e2xQf3# h5-h4 -2. d6-d7 h6-h5 -3. Rh5-h3 Qa8-f3 -4. Rf5-h5 Qa1-a8 -5. Rf3-f5 a2-a1=Q -6. Rd3-f3 Rc4-c5 -7. Rd5-d3 a3-a2 -8. Rc5-d5 a4-a3 -9. Rc6-c5 a5-a4 -10. Rb6-c6 Nd7-b8 -11. 1 bB is a promotee. Bl. caps are b7xPc6, e7xd6 & gxh. Wh. caps are axb, e2xPf3 and -1. Qh4xg4. bPa7 promoted to bBa1, one wP promoted on b8. Unlocking requires reconducting wBf1 and retracting e2xPf3.

Retract -1. Qh4xBg4+ Re5-g5 -2. Rg5-g7+ Ng7-e6+ -3. Nf5-e7 Re7-e5+ -4. Ne3-f5 Bf5-g4 -5. Ng4-e3+ Bg6-f5 -6. Bc4-f7 Bf7-g6+ -7. Bf1-c4 Ke4-f4 -8. e2xPf3+ and everything unlocks.

This is a diabolical retro-play with all 15 last single moves completely determined !

(Corrected version given in Europe Echecs 447, 07/1996)

Bl. caps are b7xa6, c7xd6 & hxg. Wh. caps are bxcxdxexf & g2xf3. The position unlocks by retracting b7xa6, which first requires resurrecting & reconducting Bl. Bc8 and 2 Rooks behind the pawn barrier.

We can try to retract
-1. Bb8-c7+ Rg4-g2
-2. g6-g5 Rb4-g4
-3. h7xBg6 Rb6-b4
-4. Bc7-b8 Bf5-g6
-5. Bd8-c7 Bh3-f5
-6. Be7-d8 Bf1-h3
-7. Bf8-e7 Rb4-b6
-8. ~ Rg4-b4
-9. ~ Rg1-g4
-10. ~ g2xBf3
-11. Bb7-f3 f6-f7
-12. Bc8-b7 e5xf6
-13. ~ d4xRe5
-14. Re4-e5+ c3xRd4
but this fails because the bK is now entombed behind the wh. Ps.

So that we must really uncapture a bR on f3. Retract
-1. Bb8-c7+ Rg4-g2
-2. g6-g5 Rb4-g4
-3. h7xBg6 Rb6-b4
-4. Bc7-b8 Bf5-g6
-5. Bd8-c7 Bh3-f5
-6. Be7-d8 Bf1-h3
-7. ~ Rb4-b6
-8. ~ Rg4-b4
-9. ~ Rg1-g4
-10. ~ g2xRf3
-11. Rb3-f3 ~
-12. Rb8-b3 ~
-13. Rh8-b8 ~
-14. Bf8-e7 ~
-15. e7-e6 e6xf7
-16. ~ d5xNe6
-17. ~ c4xBd5
-18. Bb7-d5 b3xRc4
-19. Rc8-c4 ~
-20. Ra8-c8 ~
-21. Bc8-b7 Kb5-a5
-22. b7xNa6+ Nb4-a6
and now the wK has to cross c4:
-23. ~ Nd3-b4
-24. Nd1-b2 Nb2-d3+
-25. ~ Kc4-b5
-26. ~ Kd3-c4 etc.

and a further check will be given when we retract -n. c7xNc6 N~-c6+ after the reconduction of Bl. royalties on d8 & e8.

Finally, there are two squares where the bK could not escape check: a3 & e8.
