Two men (here wN + wQ) on promotion squares really are the original men: "anti-phoenix" theme.

(Corrected version given in Europe Echecs 441, 01/1996)

1 bB is a promotee. wPe5 and f3 require 2 captures. The third is last move -1. Qh6xg5. So that bPs used two captures to promote on b1 and b1/d1 and wPh2 was captured on its column.

It is possible to unlock the cage without retracting wPd2-d3 and bPd6-d5, allowing the following shortest trip of the wK: e1-d2-e3-e4-e5-e6. This involves precise uncaptures and unpinnings.

Retract: -1. Qh6xRg5+ c5xNd4! -2. Nf5-d4 Nf1-g3 -3. Ng3-f5+ Ne3-f1 -4. a6-a7 Nd1-e3 -5. a5-a6 d2-d1=N -6. a4-a5 d3-d2 -7. e4-e5 d4-d3 -8. d3xNe4 Nd6-e4 -9. a3-a4! (not a2-a4?) Rd5-g5 -10. Ng5-f7+ Nf7-d6+ -11. Bc6-d7 Rd7-d5+ -12. Be4-c6 c6-c5 -13. Bf5-e4 c7-c6 -14. Bh3-f5 d5-d4 -15. Bf1-h3 Kg4-f4 -16. g2xNf3+ and everything unlocks. The promoted bB is from bPa7-axb-b1=B and escaped through Bb1-a2.
